OTD in 1970… #Pirates slugger Willie Stargell homers over Forbes Field’s right field roof. This is the seventh time he has done it in his career (and the second time this week) #CardArt

OTD in 1957… Ten years after Jackie Robinson broke MLBs color barrier, former negro leaguer John Kennedy becomes the #Phillies first black player. He entered the game in the eighth inning as a pinch runner against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Philadelphia was the last NL team to integrate. Kennedy only played in five games with two-plate appearances before returning to the minors with a shoulder injury. He never returned to the big leagues and retired from baseball three years later.

OTD in 1966… the Chicago #Cubs make one of the best trades in baseball history, acquiring future Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cubs gave up pitchers Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson for Fergie, outfielder Adolfo Phillips, and first baseman John Herrnstein. Jenkins would go on to win 20+ games in 8 different seasons and retire with 284 MLB victories #CardArt

OTD in 1944… Captain Elmer Gedeon becomes the first Major League Baseball player to lose his life serving in World War II when his B-26 is shot down over St. Pol, France. The 27-year-old played as an outfielder for the Washington Senators in 1939 after playing NCAA baseball, football and track at Michigan #GoBlue #CardArt
