The Brewers announced this morning that former big league catcher, legendary broadcaster and franchise icon Bob Uecker passed away last night. He was 90 years old.
Born in Milwaukee on January 26, 1934 Robert George Uecker signed with the hometown Braves in 1956. Made his MLB debut in April 1962 as a pinch hitter. Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals early in the ‘64 season. He hit two home runs that season, both at the expense of Hall of Fame pitchers Sandy Kolfax & Gaylord Perry. Won a World Series ring with the Cardinals. Dealt to the Phillies following the 1965 season. In his single season in Philadelphia, Uecker established career highs in games, at bats, hits, HRs and RBIs. Finished his playing career as a member of the 1967 Atlanta Braves. In a career that lasted 6 seasons, Uecker compiled a batting average of .200 with 14 home runs and 74 RBIs in 297 games.
