64 years ago yesterday, the Brooklyn Dodgers tried to trade Jackie Robinson to the rival New York Giants for pitcher Dick Littlefield and $35,000.
As it turned out, Jackie wasn’t interested in moving to Coogan’s Bluff.
Despite what the New York Daily News reported (see newspaper clipping below)… Jackie had already decided privately to leave the game to work for Chock Full of Nuts, publicly retiring from baseball rather than accepting the trade.
